First Japanese DVD & Blu-ray box, not too bad except it's basically redrawn artwork from Resurrection F (also by the same designer).

As for this week's episode, second most hilarious in the show thanks to the second half (though the first half is fine too).

Preview for next episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NYkZunOFxc

First box set has sold 664 copies on Blu-ray & 486 on DVD on it's first week. It's low, as expected, but it's at least higher than all of Kai's Majin Buu Blu-ray sets which had sold in the 300s on their first weeks.

The February 2016 issue of Shueisha's V Jump magazine announced on Saturday that the "God of Destruction Champa" arc of Dragon Ball Super will begin on January 24, 2016. Original creator Akira Toriyama is plotting the story and is designing the new characters. The magazine and the official website revealed a new key visual:

The official website teases a fighting match between universes six and seven. It asks, "What kind of existence is Universe 6?" and, "What are Super Dragon Balls?"

Dragon Ball Super premiered in Japan on July 5 on Fuji TV and other channels. The series is the first new Dragon Ball television series since Dragon Ball GT, which aired from 1996 to 1997.

Akira Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as well as for "original story & character concepts." Toei Animation's Kimitoshi Chioka (Hakaba Kitarō, Kamisama Kazoku) is the series director, and Naoko Sagawa (Yomiko Advertising, Inc.) and Atsushi Kido (Toei Animation) join Osamu Nozaki as producers. Kido entered Toei just as the company was animating the Dragon Ball Z anime's Frieza arc.

Toonami Asia announced last month that it will show the "English-language world premiere" in Southeast Asia and India in mid-2016.

One month away.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F movie (2015):

Dragon Ball Super: Resurrection F arc (2016):

Image

Well, the Resurrection F arc ended a few hours ago and so ends the "recap" portion of the show after 27 episodes.

This week's episode was actually pretty good, another one which handled some things better than the movie with the fight animation not looking as bad as the last 3 episodes did and thankfully the episode ended in the exact same spot as the movie so for those who didn't like these arcs or didn't bother watching because they retold the films, there was no cliffhanger here and the new stuff officially starts next week with the Universe 6 arc. Unfortunately they didn't change the end of the Freeza fight hence the pics above that I had a friend add text to them for me (the line is originally from a fansub of one of the movie's theatrical premieres) since I didn't like it in the film and don't like it here because it's the same result done in the same way. :|

Apparently Toriyama isn't happy about Dragon Ball Super, the following is a translated quote from the Dragon Ball 30th Anniversary book that was released this week.

https://twitter.com/mozumichael/status/ ... 7512298496 (original source)
http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... 0#p1040503
http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... 0#p1040516

Quote:
According to Toriyama's comment in the new 30th anniversary book, he complained to Toei about the quality of Super.

Toriyama's comment:
Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime, so it seems that DB has grown on me much that I can't leave it alone.

Wow, surprised this was kept in the book...

I don't know man, Dragon Balls GT was only a so-so series in my opinion as it just didn't have the "magic" of Z and Toriyama's creativity. But if Toriyama is going to be involved this time, it might turn out different. Speaking of Z, the highlight for me was always the Freeza saga portion of the story. I kinda lost interest after the Cell saga. The story just became fighting one enemy more powerful after another after, which Toriyama himself critique.

Personally, I actually prefer the earlier Dragon Ball stories (when Goku was still a kid), the stories had more variety and wasn't just fighting all the time.

Apparently there's a second director added to the staff.

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2016/02/28/mo ... -director/

Quote:
Today’s thirty-third episode has revealed that episode director Morio Hatano (畑野森生) has been appointed the new role of series director alongside Kimitoshi Chioka (地岡公俊). This comes just shortly following the announcement that scriptwriter King Ryū had been named the series composer for the Dragon Ball Super TV series beginning with the “God of Destruction Champa” story arc.

Image

Series Director: Morio Hatano & Kimitoshi Chioka

Note that original series director Kimitoshi Chioka is now credited second after Morio Hatano, indicating that Chioka is taking a step back in his responsibilities and Hatano is stepping into the lead role as series director. The addition of a second series director typically occurs when the lead series director has become too busy with other significant projects or is in need of assistance managing and overseeing the series. However, it is not common for the additional director to immediately assume the lead director position, so this sudden change is rather significant.

Morio Hatano has directed Dragon Ball Super episodes 6 and 14, both of which he storyboarded himself. In addition to directing several episodes of Digimon Savers, One Piece, and Marvel’s Disk Wars: Avengers, Hatano has been largely involved with the recent PreCure and Saint Seiya franchises. His sole series director credit to date has been for the first half of the Saint Seiya Omega animated TV series produced by Toei Animation between 2012 and 2014.

There might be some hope for this arc since Hatano was the guy who directed the good season of Saint Seiya Omega (episodes 1-51) plus the writing has so far improved for the better since King Ryu became head writer.

Still a bit weird to see someone stepping back in the middle of the show though, last time I recall someone doing that was in the middle of Omega's second season when Kōhei Kureta replaced Tatsuya Nagamine as lead series director after 21 episodes since Nagamine left to work on Happiness Charge Precure.

Time to bump this

First, a bit off-topic but for those who have had problems with the recent DBZ animation (not just Super but for other stuff like the two movies), this post might help explain things since the blame is being directed not just at Toei for the super rushed scheduling but at veteran, Tadayoshi Yamamuro.

https://www.reddit.com/r/dbz/comments/4 ... _in_super/

Quote:
Quote:
[Tadayoshi Yamamuro] is recognized as one of the best animators in the Dragon Ball franchise and it shows by his quality of work in Episode 13 of Super and in The Goku vs Majin Vegeta fight. My question is does anybody know if he's doing any upcoming episodes for the Universe 6 vs Universe 7 tournament arc? I think the art and animation looks good now but I feel he would give the fights a big push into being fantastic. I can't imagine he'd be cheap though so if anybody could let me know, that'd be great!

The clip you've linked was animated by the very talented Yuya Takahashi. Yamamuro was simply a supervisor on the episode. His work in that episode was actually pretty poor, with much of it looking stiff and robotic, as though it hadn't been inbetweened.

Tadayoshi Yamamuro was once a very good animator, but his only benefit these days is that he can draw on-model -- obviously, since he's the character designer for the show. His modern work has been criticized by animation fans and fellow animators alike. Primarily due to his draconian rule as a supervisor; he will overdraw everyone's work, regardless of quality. In Resurrection 'F', he totally redrew the legendary [Hisashi] Eguchi's cut (Gohan firing ki blasts in the cavern). Do you really think an animator like him needs to have his work redrawn? The man expressed his deep disappointment on Twitter over it. Yamamuro possesses unbelievable arrogance that you absolutely do not want around Dragon Ball if you want it to succeed visually. He's turning other talented animators away from the series due to his overbearing hand.

He simply can't animate to the quality he once could and his character designs are horrible, too. Check out his modern designs now and compare them to [Katsuyoshi] Nakatsuru's work (the man behind Z episodes #44, #120, and the Bardock special). They're horrendous. People complain about things being too bright and shiny these days. That's on Yamamuro and no one else.

On his animation "talent", compare his cut in episode 13 to the animator he's been channeling from the Ultimate Blast Intro. Yamamuro sticks with mundane static camera shots, never moving the camera with the action to create a sense of dynamism. It's all so stilted and bland which totally wastes his talent for choreography. Zero impact to his animation. It's why Resurrection 'F' is so bland looking compared to the likes of One Piece Film Z, for example.

What Super needs is genuine talent working on the series. One-Punch Man was so successful because it utilised many young animators from the web-gen. These are animators who truly understand how to use modern animation techniques. You can see the influence very clearly in this cut particularly.

Don't get me wrong, Yamamuro was once very talented. The Goku vs Majin Vegeta fight is legendary, and so was his work on the many Dragon Ball movies. It's just that he hasn't evolved like many of his contemporaries did. He regressed, became arrogant, and is stifling the much needed creativity that this series so desperately craves. You've all probably read the recent interview where he waives off Super's problematic production, blaming it on newcomers! The sheer nerve and untruth of that. You only have to look at the staff lists to see that's not the case at all.

While Super is problematic and Yamamuro certainly produces better action than many of the animators working on the series right now, we shouldn't be calling for him in particular to return. We should want genuinely fresh talent. People like Shuichi Iseki who worked on episode 16! Hell, give Naoki Tate enough time and he'll blow you all away. There's a reason he's handling that major episode coming up (I won't spoil it).

The fandom's lust for Yamamuro is built on outdated examples. Clamoring for him will not make Super thrive. Simply wish for better, more talented animators that are capable of more than just drawing on-model. Ken Ootsuka and Tatsuya Oka, for example.

(added more links in the quote that aren't in the linked post)

There's more that was posted in the responses to that post and also at Kanzenshuu if interested.

And now for the "good" news...

Apparently Super's going to be airing on TV later this year in Germany & France.

http://www.walz2consult.de/newsletter-a ... tter4.html
http://forumlicence.kazachok.com/index. ... ompany=639

And as for the US...

https://youtu.be/X58PrXM82Bs?t=15m24s

It hasn't been confirmed yet but Sean Schemmel at Bristol Comic Con said he thinks they should have Super at the end of the year since no contracts & deals have been made yet.

He also hinted at something new video game-related that, from what Chris Sabat told him, might be coming out soon.

ANN wrote:
The official Twitter account of the Dragon Ball Super television anime series unveiled a new visual for the show's upcoming "Future Trunks Arc" on Friday.

The new arc will debut in the show's 47th episode on June 12. The episode is titled "SOS From the Future! A New Black Enemy Reveals Himself!" The episode's plot will start in the future when Earth is free from the Androids' domination. A man named "Black" suddenly appears, and Trunks tries to defend himself. He is no match, even in his Super Saiyan form. Bulma is resolved to make a time machine and ask for help from Goku and Vegeta from the past, but after half a year, she only accumulated enough fuel for the time machine to make a one-way trip. Then, Black appears again before Bulma and Trunks.

Original creator Akira Toriyama is plotting the story and designing the new characters for the arc, including Future Trunks' design (seen here). The new arc follows the conclusion of the "God of Destruction Champa" arc. After the end of the fight between universes six and seven, Goku and friends encounter Future Trunks once more. The anime's official website asks, "Why has Future Trunks returned to the present again after defeating Cell and attaining peace?" and "Who will be the future's new enemy?"

Toriyama previously teased in a comment that the new enemy will be called "Goku Black." He also teased that the arc will involve both the Gods of Destruction and the Supreme Kai.

Dragon Ball Super premiered in Japan in July 2015 on Fuji TV and other channels. The series is the first new Dragon Ball television series since Dragon Ball GT, which aired from 1996 to 1997.

Akira Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as well as for "original story & character concepts." Kido entered Toei just as the company was animating the Dragon Ball Z anime's Frieza arc.

Toonami Asia announced in November that it will show the "English-language world premiere" of Dragon Ball Super in Southeast Asia and India in mid-2016.

That poster looks like fan art, and I clearly have not been keeping up with any of the movies or new TV series because I had no idea Trunks and Mai were an item?! WTF, it's like one of those awful crack ships.

Yeah, this is something that began in the Battle of Gods film but it didn't come across as serious to me so hopefully there's some kind of explanation for this.

In animation-related news, Mamoru Hoshino, one of the worst animators, had recently joined the show and his second episode, which aired last week, looked terrible (not completely his fault in this case but he was partly involved). He is nicknamed "SSOguy" by people because he had worked on a majority of episodes of Saint Seiya Omega as key animator (28 episodes) & animation director (8 episodes of season 2) and he had also worked on some episodes of Happiness Charge & Go! Princess Precure.

He didn't necessarily draw this but its from an episode he was the AD of.

I'm on vacation on my laptop so I don't have HaCha here but the easiest stuff to identify would be the end of the "group" transformation pose (uh, 24 I think is where it first shows up), and Tender's attacks at the start of the episode after they free her. Also Honey's innocent form attack.

Hoshino Mamoru is even worse. He is the dreaded 'SSOguy' that PreCure fans hate for working on so many cuts in recent episodes. Hoshino does a lot of cuts on the quick, even more so than Yashima.

(other examples of his work is this and this from HaCha episode 10)

Prior to Super, he had worked as top key animator on Dragon Ball Xenoverse and the cutscenes in that game looked like crap. Even the opening sucked and was a huge step down compared to Ultimate Tenkaichi & even Battle Of Z which is a shame because unlike those two games, the Xenoverse game itself was awesome (best DBZ game since Shin Budokai-Another Road imo) and I expect Xenoverse 2 to be even better, hopefully without animated cutscenes as sloppy as the first game.

That actually looks pretty good, and considering my favorite arc in DBZ is the Android arc, I'm almost enticed to watch DBS now.

But I still can't shake off the feeling that everything about this sequel feels so incredibly pointless (I mean obviously aside from Toei being hungry for money as usual).

Waiting for a good fansub because I had issues with the streams I was using but from what I did see, today's episode was pretty crazy. A good amount of praise on the animation side during the Future Trunks scenes if it means anything.

http://www.animatorscorner.com/animatio ... isode-9002

The Bad: SSOGuy was part of this one (most likely some of the present scenes with Goku and them)
The Good: Apparently they brought in a long-time Pokemon writer for this episode.

The what?: The first series director, Kimitoshi Chioka, is no longer credited as director with Hatano so he's most likely done with the show (assuming he was ever involved with the Champa arc at all).

Apparently another episode got fixed for Blu-ray, this is from the recently released third Blu-ray box set.

So from what has been known so far:

Blu-ray box 1: Only episode 5 (see this post)
Blu-ray box 2: No fixes (huge shame because episode 24 looked worse than 5)
Blu-ray Box 3: Only episode 25 so far, still waiting for word on the other 11 episodes.

Looks like FUNi may have Super already since Jason Douglas hinted that he's recording for the show (that image of Beerus is from episode 1).

EDIT: And he took it down. Screencap here

... I regret nothing. You may never be able to take Black Goku seriously again.

For those unaware, there was an extended TV cut of the Resurrection F movie and that just finished airing in Japan which had new footage featuring Future Trunks.

Spoiler: show
Beginning of the film - Short recap of DBZ's Freeza arc with new animation. Trunks found a scrapbook of Dragon Ball's past and that's where the recap starts.

End of the film - Trunks trying to get away from Black, it's basically a prequel to Super's current arc because both Bulma & Mai are still alive in this.

What a waste... :|

I don't expect FUNi to ever get this version for whatever reason it was that they never got the extended One Piece Alabasta film (Battle of Gods was a special case) so you guys might want to look around for the new footage if you want to see it that badly.

EDIT: Here you go

^ BEST EPISODE

SHIDA SAVES THE DAY.

That whole first half was great but his part was the best in all of Super so far.

Apparently he also did something for this week's One Piece as well.

Not bad!

As far as I understand this is the only episode Shida has worked on for Super correct? He's been spending most of his time on other works. We probably wont get to see him return this arc in Super or ever.

Shida did a handful of storyboards for the first two arcs, but this is the first time he's done animation. The reason Shida never popped in to do animation before was almost definitely the schedule (Shida is notoriously slow at animating), as of episode 39 animators only had 3 weeks to animate the episodes, but the schedule has greatly improved since then, Shida had at least 7 and a half weeks to do his cut. With the schedule no longer being complete hell we'll hopefully see him (and other talented animators) pop in from time to time. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Shida pop up again for the final battle of the arc.

That actually explains a lot, used to wonder why he wasn't around to animate any of early Super.

Oh I hope he does come back later for this arc. :innocent:

Apparently Toriyama isn't happy about Dragon Ball Super, the following is a translated quote from the Dragon Ball 30th Anniversary book that was released this week.

I can't help but agree with Mr. Toriyama on this actually Super's Artwork is questionable (still better than Crystal's artwork though), also I hate Funimation's VA choices (especially Frieza Chris Ayers is god awful Linda Young is the true Lord Frieza)

Guess I have a reason to bump this, with Xenoverse 2 coming out next week, there is some recent news on Super-related content for the game.

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2016/07/07/dr ... s-details/
http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2016/10/13/ba ... -dlc-pack/

-Goku Black & Future Trunks will be pre-order DLC with Black for the Day 1 Edition and Trunks for the Deluxe Edition. Each should be unlockable in the game if Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta in Xenoverse 1 is anything to go by (he was one of the choices to wish with the dragon).

-Frost & Cabba will be in the game's first DLC pack so they'll be playable and their missions will be available.

-Hit will be in the game's main story so he's not DLC

No news on Champa, Botamo, Megetta, Monaka & Zamasu yet but I wouldn't be surprised if Champa & Monaka won't be in, or not as playable characters at least.

It'll be interesting to see who voices these guys in the dub, I personally hope they stay consistent with the Japanese in the case of Frost and have Chris Ayres voice him too.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... ca/.107481

Speaking of the anime, it's airing in Israel & Portugal now and Toei actually allowed them to dub the songs which is surprising considering what happened with the recent Z movies, the Buu arc of Kai and also Sailor Moon Crystal.

It will be getting dubbed in other countries and premiering soon.
