These files for the Linux fortune program provide over 6000 "You Know You Watch Too Much Sailor Moon When..." jokes created between c. 1995 and 2007.

The jokes come from Anton Ptitsin's YKYWTMSMW Compilation book, version 5, released on April 18, 2007. The fortunes are derived from the plaintext version of the book.

Download them here: https://github.com/redblade7/smtoomuch

The files were updated to v5.1 to fix possible installation issues. If you downloaded and installed v5.0 (which you would if you installed on 5/12/17 or earlier), you might want to download v5.1 (released 5/12/17) and reinstall.

I just released v5.2 which fixes a very important typo and adds an uninstall option. If you downloaded it on 5/13/17 earlier, you might want to update it again. (Don't worry, this is the last one! Unless I or someone else comes up with more jokes, I've seen one or two new ones on this forum...)

Just letting everyone know that if you click "Clone or download->Download ZIP" instead of downloading the regular releases, you will get the latest "testing version" which includes hundreds of new YKYWTMSMWs, including over 200 PGSM ones from 2004 and 901 German ones (unsupported and installed separately), as well as more recent ones from this decade.

I'm hoping that Maraviollantes will take a look and release a version 6 of his book (version 5 was in 2007). YKYWTMSMWs not in his book are separately numbered and prefixed with B, G, H, R, or V. If there is a version 6, they will be added to the main list.

Back in 2007 Maraviollantes was ten years younger, Usagi didn't peddle menstrual pads and condoms, and people still watched so much Sailor Moon we could write whole books about that. All of that belongs to the past now. :blue:

I've only been a Moonie for 2 years...I don't understand what all that means. Do you not like Sailor Moon anymore, or are you just saying you're too busy for another book? I'm interested in doing this for archival purposes, would you mind if I took over for Version 6 (the book), since you're not interested in maintaining it?

Feel free to take whatever you want. To put what I said in simple terms, popularity of BSSM and overall fandom activity dropped down significantly compared to ten or twenty years ago, and fandom culture changed a lot. So things like YKYWTMSW, which were popular many years ago, are barely relevant any longer. I doubt there are any more than maybe a dozen or two people in the whole world who bothered to actually read all 6k+ entries in that book during ten years passing. Making yet longer and more elaborate list now would be just a waste of time. Nobody would read it, simple as that.

People really would read all of them? I thought the book was just for archival purposes, and that's why I thought seeing one when you open a terminal window (or use indicator-fortune) would be funny every now and then.

I'd imagine fan interest would have recovered at least significantly with the release of Crystal and the uncensored Viz redubbing being on Hulu, no? Also, what do you mean by "fandom culture changed," do you mean that we aren't kids anymore with time on our hands to make unfunny misspelled jokes, or was there really something special about Sailor Moon fandom that disappeared, that I needed to have been there to appreciate?

In the beginning of 2000s there were more new BSSM fanfics popping up in one day than there are now in a whole year. People don't write much these days, and read yet less. Any piece of text on the Internet that takes more than 5 minutes to read will be ignored by like 99% of people who see it, even if it is relevant to their interests. So monstrosities like "YKYWTMSW compilation" with its infinite walls of text are somewhat outdated now.

I'm big on politics and blogs, and I've run political blogs (though not in years), and studied political science in college, so I'm used to reading and writing quite a bit. I could write a bit more, I used to write a lot of Beavis & Butthead fanfiction, so maybe I should give Sailor Moon a shot. It's sad though, my sister is a teacher and has said that "140 characters or less" has had a real psychological effect on Gen Z which leads to impaired ability to retain information.

The "testing version" of YKYWTMSMW Fortunes for Linux, which includes hundreds more fortunes numbered in separate sets, has been finalized as Version 5.3, now available for download:

https://github.com/redblade7/smtoomuch

As I have taken over maintenance of the book from Maraviollantes, the 500+ YKYWTMSMW jokes in the "other" folder will be integrated into an upcoming Version 6 of the book, released along with a version 6 of the Linux fortune files.

The fortune files (not the book) have been updated to v6.1, the main change being the separation of "offensive" fortunes into the offensive sets which are accessed separately (fortune -a, fortune -o, or fortune off, depending on distribution).

On what qualifies for "offensive" (it is strict to the point of silliness, but note the last paragraph):

Quote:
-----OFFENSIVE YKYWTMSMWs-----

The "offensive" YKYWTMSMWs have been placed into a separate offensive fortune set. If there are any offensive fortunes in the main fortune set, please file a report in the Issue Tracker, and if the developer feels the YKYWTMSMW qualifies for the offensive fortune set, it will be moved there.

Here is a general idea of what qualifies for the offensive fortune set:

(a) Seven dirty words, graphic sexual language
(b) Sex, nudity, overly racy
(c) Anything LGBT related
(d) Crossdressing (including cosplay and Halloween)
(e) Racism, sexism, homophobia
(f) Political/religious insults
(g) Porn and hentai related
(h) Jokes about incest
(i) "Nostalgia Critic" style remarks

The choices for "offensive" should not be considered a reflection of the developer's personal beliefs, but rather a way to protect the user from the wrong person seeing the wrong YKYWTMSMW at the wrong time. However, as this is an ongoing project, the developer makes no guarantees.

There are also two additional YKYWTMSMWs (written by myself on a recent thread) added to the fortune files and noted for the next book release (probably 2018).

Enjoy!

The "offensive" guidelines have been slightly updated:

(a) Seven dirty words, four letter words, graphic sexual language
(b) Sex, nudity, overly racy
(c) Anything LGBT related
(d) Crossdressing (including cosplay and Halloween)
(e) Racism, sexism, homophobia
(f) Political/religious insults
(g) Porn and hentai related
(h) Jokes about incest and bestiality
(i) "Nostalgia Critic" style remarks

The choices for "offensive" should not be considered a reflection of the developer's personal beliefs, but rather a way to protect the user from the wrong person seeing the wrong YKYWTMSMW at the wrong time. However, as this is an ongoing project, the developer makes no guarantees.

I cannot edit the original post anymore, so go by these guidelines. (The official "offensive" guidelines are listed in README.md and CONTRIBUTING.md)
