Kodansha Japan still does bilingual manga? That's news to me since I haven't heard anything about those in years.

What does that mean? English and Japanese text in the same bubble? English text footnotes? The manga in Japanese at the beginning of the book with the English version at the back? :?

Never mind; I just translated the Amazon page. Looks like it has English text in the bubbles with the Japanese text in the margins. Sounds interesting. It's Acts 1-6 so I wonder if this is using the shinshouban version with the current English translation or the kanzenban edition with a/the new translation?

This is something they should've done like 20 years ago, but okay.

The last one I heard them doing was "Attack on Titan".

Considering the English translation's they use, for all the blingual editions I've seen, are free of Japanese honorifics; this could bode well for us with the Eternal editions.

ウィリアム・フラナガン (翻訳) - William Flanagan (translation)

Good enough reason to avoid this, hope he didn't get brought back for the new English Kanzenbans.

Well, that ray of hope was fun while it lasted.

Whats with the translator ?

Is he known to be bad ?

As to why they are re-using him - it will probably be cheaper than asking a new translator to do it from scratch because of professional translation software. Pro Translators have a "translation memory" system ( google it ) and so that means that this translator will probably already have 90% of the translation already saved on his computer.

So, what exactly did he do wrong? Apologies - I'm newer to the translation ordeal.

He's the guy who translated the revised manga for Kodansha that's currently in print (until he got replaced around volume 8 I think). This bilingual release will just be a re-release of the his terrible translation with the Japanese text in the margins. No thanks.

Do you mind providing some excerpts of his work for demonstration/example purposes? Sorry, just curious here...

You can check out some examples of his work here: https://missdream.org/editorials/sailor ... -1-errors/

Basically his translation of the manga has lots of really awkward, unnatural sounding dialog, as well as lots of typos and blatant translations errors such as the now-infamous "Spark Ring Wide Pressure" and "Princess Beryl."

Well, that's certainly sounding like a trash translation to me...

I'm very grateful we have Miss Dream's more consistenly good quality fanslations around - hard to find any inconsistencies in those from what I've read.

If they were going to bring back a translator, why couldn't they have gone with Mari Morimoto? (the woman who did volumes 9-12 and the short story volumes) Her translation was so much better, and her work for Viz shows she could do a well-localized translation if asked.

I'll still give William a chance and see if this new translation is an improvement, but I'm not so sure I'll buy the Eternal edition now. :(

This was supposed to come out today, but it seems it's been pushed back to September 8. Wonder what prompted the delay...

Miss Dreams are not that good either . Sadly all the manga translations have errors

Yes, I've likewise recently become aware that Miss Dream has its own flaws (mostly an over-localization issue that results in some made-up lines).

Alex Glover's translation is pretty great but that's not a scanlation -- it's just the translated script.

I'm not sure why this got delayed but that's fine with me. I own the Sailor Moon manga in various forms already (some Tokyopop volumes, the entire English Kodansha release in boxsets, almost the entire Japanese renewal edition, the entire Japanese perfect edition) so while I'm eager to add to my collection...there's no rush, lol.

I hope that this bi-lingual edition helps with my Japanese studies.

Personally, my favorite translation of the manga is the one that never got finished, StarryHeaven. They only got as far as completing the first 12 acts of the second run version, but the translation stayed true to the spirit of the Japanese script and read fairly well in English, even if it also kept honorifics and "Maboroshii no Ginzuishou" untranslated. It was charming, for what it was.

After skimming the first chapter, I don't know. It feels like it has the same stilted dialogue as the Kodansha release.

There's no "live your life more nervously" or other nonsense like that, at least.

No, but there is new nonsense replacing it like:

"Wake me up earlier, you stupid Mom. Byye Bye!"
"What's up with scratching me?"
"How can you, a girl, eat lunch this early?"
"Give me more and more of the energy of youth!"
"Hey, don't you think you could worry a bit more, Usagi-chan?" (That's vague, worry about what?)

It also leaves "senshi" and "odango atama" untranslated, which creates a bit of confusion at how Mamoru decided on that nickname.

That's kind of weird they're suddenly leaving Senshi untranslated after insisting on using Sailor Guardians for the past decade.

Kodansha Japan and Naoko Takeuchi are the ones insisting on "Sailor Guardians". This is just a fan translation that decided not to adhere to that.
